Rodini Sightseeing Guide
Rodini park was landscaped and created by the local populace
before roman times, and with the Roman occupation of the island, they loved it so
much they spent a lot of time and effort looking after the park and built aqueducts
and other buildings, some of which can still be seen today.
The park is a green and
pleasant place, with a large stream running through it, crossed by a small bridge.
Within the park nature and especially peacocks flourish and breed naturally.
When
in the park you can take small rowing boat rides around the park following the course
of the slow flowing stream. Its a popular place to come for both visitors and locals
alike and is very refreshing in the heat of summer.
If you are a nature lover you
will be in your element, with a wide range of nature including birds, insects and
lizards that live here, the flora and fauna is absolutely amazing and makes for some
interesting photographs.
Rodini Park -
The park is easily accessible by car, or by catching
the local bus and sits just 3km outside of the capital Rhodes Town. You will find
it quite busy in the summer months but its well worth a visit, even for a few hours.
Within
the park you can pick up some light refreshments walk by the stream under cooling
Cypress and Pine trees and even venture into the small local zoo which has been built
over the past few years.
For the more athletic and adventurous, take a walk to the
the tomb of Ptolemies. The tomb is just a short 10 minute walk and has been dug
into the rock centuries ago. The tomb dates back to the Hellenistic period and it
is distinctly Doric in terms of architecture. A cemetery known as the city of the
dead was also built in the park during the 3rd century and even now you can still
see the tombstones and carved figures that are several centuries old.
Some of the
nature you can see in the park as covered above is turtles, terrapins, ducks and
swans all carrying on with their business feeding and nest building. The park is
an Oasis in this parched landscape and well worth visiting to see the amazing aqueduct
and lush scenery.
