Afandou Holiday Guide

Afandou in RhodesThe charming holiday resort of Afandou is located just 18 km south of Rhodes town and lies just 2 km inland from the coast.  The name of the village comes from the Greek word “Afanto” which means invisible and in the past it was where people hid from Pirates rampaging through Rhodes as you cannot see the village from the coast.

The town of Afandou has a wealth of bars, restaurants and Taverna's and is popular in the summer months with holidaymaker's from all over Europe.  The beach is easily reachable on the Happy Train which runs regularly from the town square to the long pebble and sandy beach of Afandou.

If your thinking of choosing a holiday in Afandou then make sure you read the travel guide below to match this resort with your holiday requirements.  Its a lovely picturesque resort with plenty for couples and families with chilled out nightlife and a lovely quiet beach even during the summer months.

Who visits Afandou

You will find that its mainly Europeans including the British and Germans who visit this little town but its also popular with many Greek and Russian holidaymaker's throughout the summer.  You will find that many people return to Afandou year after year because of the friendly and welcoming nature of the locals.

Best time to visit Afandou

The rainy season of Rhodes is usually November until March and you wont find flights to Rhodes from many destinations at this time.  Your best to go anytime from April to October with July and August being the two hottest months of the year on the island.  Average temperatures in Afandou normally reach 27°C (80°F) and you can check

Beach of Afandou

The beaches of Afandou are pleasantly quiet even in the summer months and they haven't been overdeveloped unlike some other beaches in Rhodes..  The beach itself is around 4 km long and is a mix of fine and larger pebbles which shelf gently into the crystal clear blue waters.

You will find certain areas of the beach have been supplied with sunbeds, umbrellas and even basic watersports are on offer including banana boat rides and the like.  These areas are well catered for by small snack bars and Taverna's.

The beach of Afandou is great for children and the fact that you take the happy train from the centre to the beach on a daily basis is normally a great treat for kids also.  The beach itself has gained a few Blue Flag awards for its cleanliness also so Afandou beach is definitely the place to be on your holidays.

Afandou daytime activities

The town of Afandou has a few shops which mainly sell local gifts and souvenirs and also supermarkets to stock up for your self catering holiday or grab a thirst quenching drink in the height of summer.  There are not many large shops or chains and your best bet for a bit of retail therapy is to visit Rhodes Town.

There is also
Afandou Golf Course which is open to the public and easily to book or turn up on the day for a round of golf.  Its an 18 hole golf course 72-par course was designed by Donald Harradine and overlooks the sea. You can hire everything you need for a round of golf and its open throughout the year so you can easily golf in low season in the cooler weather.

Nightlife of Afandou

The nightlife in Afandou is quiet and relaxed and perfect for those with younger families who want to enjoy a few drinks before retiring to the hotel.  There are plenty of bars to choose from and all priced reasonable as you would expect.  You can sit and drink a few local beers or freshly made cocktails while people watching in the main square of Afandou.  If your looking for more lively nightlife then the party town of
Faliraki is just  5km away and is usually a reasonable priced taxi ride there.
