Rhodes is a delightful island full of wonderful beaches, historic
monuments and buildings and all wrapped up in welcoming Greek charm and hospitality.
This make the island of Rhodes an ideal place to visit on a cruise holiday. If you’re in the market for a Greek island cruise then you will be pleasantly surprised
that Rhodes is one of the main attractions on most cruise ships itineraries. Normally
you will find that you visit Athens, Crete, Kos, Santorini and Mykonos and of course
Rhodes Town.
Cruise liners vary in size and luxury but we found cruise.co.uk to offer
some of the best deals around for booking a tailor made cruise. You will find most
cruise ships stop off at chosen destinations for you to explore the islands and what
they have to offer.
When docking in Rhodes town you will have the opportunity to explore
this historic town and see everything it has to offer. Starting at Mandraki harbour
you are just minutes away from the traditional Old Town of Rhodes, divided into 3
parts you will find the Turkish, Jewish and Knights quarter. The quarters are all
unique in their own right and represent the chequered and colourful past of the island.
Enter
through St Catherine’s gate and into the Knights quarter where you will find the
palace of the Grand Master, which is now a museum holding fantastic collections of
gold, excavated artefacts and frescos. You will also find the hospital of St John
which again is another museum but well worth a look.
Grab a guidebook for exploring
the Old Town or just get lost on the winding alleyways full of amazing architecture
and small local cafes and bakers. Make sure you know how to get back though you
don’t want the ship leaving without you.
There are a few other destinations you can visit when taking a cruise to Rhodes,
one such excursion is a visit to Tsambika beach, and this is a relatively quiet beach,
popular with locals and tourists alike. The warm sands of the beach shelf gently
into the crystal clear blue sea, a small Taverna offers up thirst quenching drinks
and a local man offers up water sports for the more adventurous. You can read more
about the area of Tsambika here, and the excursion usually lasts about 3 hours.
There
are a few sightseeing and guided tours around the most popular sights on Rhodes including
Lindos and its imposing hilltop Acropolis, this is one of the jewels of Rhodes and
has to be the most popular place to visit for most holidaymakers.
